New Car Review – 2015 Mazda 6 Sedan

The 2014 Mazda 6 sedan garnered a lot of attention in 2014 as it underwent a complete makeover. Any time a car undergoes a major overhaul in a prior year it is a good idea for consumers to ask whether or not he following year would be a good time to purchase the same make and model. Very few changes are typically made the year after a complete redesign. As a result, it can be a better investment for consumers to purchase the previous year’s model at a lower price. At the same time, there are also some incremental improvements between the initial redesign and the second year as manufacturers respond to consumer feedback. The question is which of these situations best applies to the 2015 Mazda 6 sedan.

What’s New in 2015?

For 2015, the Mazda 6 sedan will have either very few changes or a noticeable amount based upon what trim level is selected. In order to stay competitive in the sedan-space manufacturers must always be improving their vehicles. Industry experts often point to the sedan market as the most competitive in all of the automotive industry. All of the 2015 Mazda 6 sedans come with one-touch power windows, keyless entry, and keyless ignition on the Touring trim level. There is also a new option package which combines a new sound system with satellite radio and a sunroof.

Body Styles/Trim Levels for the 2015 Mazda 6

In 2015 the Mazda 6 sedan comfortably seats five passengers and is offered in three trim levels. They are the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. There are a large number of standard features on the base manual transmission Sport. They include 17 inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, cloth up Wall Street, full power accessories, six speaker sound system, USB/iPod interface, auxiliary jack, and 3.5” multi-information display system.

Consumers can also choose the optional automatic transmission which will add Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, rearview camera, and audio upgrades. It will also increase the size of the multi-information display to a 5.8 inch touchscreen, Pandora integration, and text message display functionality.

The next upgrade is the Touring trim level. This trim level features 19 inch alloy wheels, rear cross traffic alerts, dual zone automatic climate control, six way power driver seat, keyless ignition/entry, and premium vinyl leatherette upholstery. Consumers that choose the automatic transmission can benefit from an additional option package which includes numerous upgrades. Some of the notable additions are a sunroof, upgraded 11 speaker Bose audio system, and satellite radio. It is important to note that in order to upgrade to the Touring Technology package the additional automatic transmission option package is necessary. The Touring Technology package includes automatic headlights, auto dimming rear-view and driver-side mirrors, rain sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, and Smart City frontal collision mitigation system.

The final trim option is the Grand Touring package. Along with everything listed above, this package adds adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system, energy capture system, handling departure warning system. The energy capture system, known as i-Eloop, improves energy efficiency by storing energy captured during deceleration which is used to power the air conditioning, lighting, and miscellaneous accessories.

2015 Mazda 6 Sedan Performance

This vehicle is powered by a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine which boasts 184 hp and 185 pound feet of torque. The Sport and Touring trim offer both a manual and automatic transition while the Grand Touring trim only offers an automatic transmission. Overall, the Mazda 6 sedan boasts a quick acceleration time for a midsize sedan and has an estimated fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon combined. While it only has a four-cylinder engine, reviewers have consistently noted that revs smoothly and quietly and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly and quickly. In terms of handling, the Mazda 6 sedan is one of the more agile midsize cars with excellent tire grip and well-controlled body motion.

2015 Mazda 6 Sedan Interior

While some say the front area lacks extra space, there is plenty of rear legroom and generous headroom. This makes it ideal for drivers taller than 6 feet. Unfortunately, the sedan sloping rear roofline makes the rear window smaller and can lead passengers to feel more cramped than they actually are. In total, there is 14.8 cubic feet of luggage space.

Overall Impressions of the 2015 Mazda 6 Sedan

While the midsize sedan class is one of the most competitive on the market 2015 Mazda 6 sedan compares admirably to the competition. While it does not stand out in any particular category it is a versatile, agile option which has something for everyone.
