Audi is well known for its quality of finish and interior.  The TT Quattro is no different.  Predominantly black with buttons backlit in stark red, everything is easy to find and operate.  The “cockpit” provides a brilliant driving position that does not require too much effort to enter.  In the front leg room and headroom is limited but, after all, this is a sports car.  Still it does offer folding rear seats, which gives some practicality.

Driveability

The TT Quattro has excellent grip which is the hallmark of Audi’s all-wheel system.  In combination with the high torque levels and the TT becomes a mean machine without the big engine.  The key to its on road performance is its low weight.

The TT comes only in a six-speed manual so an automatic is not available in the diesel.  It has a power output of 125 kW (172PS) and 350 Nm of torque. Yet at the same time the TT Coupé consumes on average only around 53.3 mpg.

What’s Included

The standard gear is limited which may disappoint some buyers.  The starting base price gives you climate controlled A/C, leather trim, cruise, auto headlights and wipers, six-stack CD stereo and 17 inch alloys.  But, as always, other Audi extras are costly.

Technology has also provided Ford with the resources to make the C-Max and Grand C-Max a start and stop system that helps it to save o fuel. This start and stop system shuts the engine off at brief intervals when the vehicle is not immobile such as when it waits at a stop light.

This kind of technology has been part of the European system. However, this is the first time that Ford is using it and applying it to the C-Max.

Ford plan is to use their newly initiated C-segment architecture to make up to two million cars each year as well as 10 exclusive models depending on the platform.

One of those models is the new Ford Focus, which is currently a popular car in Europe and will be coming to the United States in 2011. It will be replacing the tired type that is now running in the United States.

Ford Motor also revealed their Focus Econetic at the auto show in Frankfurt as the most efficient and optimized variant of the original Focus. The emission output is 99 grams per kilometer and gives almost 62 miles to the gallon.

These cars will be new to the United States, but have been enjoying excellent sales and profits from the European market.

GM’s Cadillac brand won’t have a presence while  Chrysler’s Dodge and Jeep have moved to the Fiat stand.  GM’s European brands, Opel and Saab, will only serve to remind that GM is selling them. Other notable absences include Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan’s Infiniti, which are instead focusing on the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

Many attendees at the show will focus on advances in electric cars and hybrids, and for improvements that might bring the vehicles into the mainstream. They’ll also look for clues about forthcoming small-car offerings from U.S. carmakers aiming to improve their line of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Top new product offerings include four new electric vehicles from Renault, with one headed for consumers by 2011, including one with no internal combustion engine at all; a hybrid Mercedes B-Class, called the F-Cell, which sports a fuel cell and an electric motor; and the first plug-in version of Toyota’s Prius hybrid, meaning its batteries can be charged from a household outlet.

GM will tout its Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in electric that uses an internal-combustion engine to extend its range beyond the distances that the batteries are capable of handling.

Those cars are headed for consumers soon, but BMW AG gives a look farther down the road with its low-slung supercoupe, the Vision EfficientDynamics. It’s a high performance, plug-in diesel-electric hybrid powered by a three-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo engine, and by not one but two electric motors, one for the rear wheels, one for the front.

Ford said it hasn’t scaled back at the show, as its European division vehicles are better sellers than GM and Chrysler brands.  Opel has a new version of its Astra, its mainstay in European markets. The Astra will also give a preview of GM’s plans for small cars in the United States.

“There will be an electric car at almost every stand,” at this year’s Frankfurt show, Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, an industry expert at the University of Duisburg-Essen said, although it would be some time before they are on the production line and in dealer show rooms.

“Like in hybrids, the Japanese are ahead of the Germans in electric cars,” he said. “One of the reasons is the battery technology which in Japan is systematically further developed.

“Another reason is Germans’ strength in diesel,” Dudenhoeffer said. “Large parts companies like Robert Bosch, for example, are behind the curve in batteries and electric cars,” compared to the Japanese, he said.

He said Toyota has already built its 2 millionth hybrid car this year — an important link in the electric car chain — while Daimler’s Mercedes S400, the only German hybrid on the market so far, has built less than 200 of the cars to date.

In August, Nissan Motor Co. in Japan unveiled the Leaf, an electric car scheduled to go into mass production for a global market in 2012. And U.S. President Barack Obama committed $2.4 billion in federal grants to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries in the U.S.

Last month, Germany’s government said it would commit some euro500 million over the next three years on a plan to put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2020, including euro170 million into battery research.

The heavy batteries that take the place of international combustion engines and gasoline are expensive to produce, and countries like South Korea and Japan are far ahead in research and development. Improving them is key.

Analysts expect global production of purely electric cars to expand rapidly in the coming years. IHS Global Insight forecast that it will grow from nearly 9,500 this year to more than 58,000 in 2011.

Germany’s Volkswagen AG, Europe’s biggest automaker, has said it hopes to introduce its first electric cars on the market in 2013. It’s expected to show off an electric version of its “Up!” city car. Daimler AG, which has been testing an electric version of its two-seater Smart, is working with California-based electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. on developing better battery and electric drive systems.

Ford Motor Co. will also offer an all-electric commercial van in 2010 and plans to have three other electric vehicles available in the U.S. by 2012.

With a weight of less than 2000 pounds, this car ranks easily as one of the lightest vehicles across the States. Within 4-point-something seconds, this light vehicle goes up to 60 mph and this has earned it the cool factor from many drivers.

2008 Lotus Elise brings a supercharged engine for the new lotus Elise, which doesn’t even need too much power because of its weight. The 2 seater convertible is good enough on the road. The engine certainly has an unusual but Cool name, and with some really good revving, the 1.3 liter engine gets ready for a great performance. The engine design provides for better fuel economy than its predecessors, with less emission and greater power being the other plus points. The front and rear distribution of weight is an enviable 50-50, mainly due to the small engine. Suspension is better in this car compared to some predecessors. The car offers a fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The short shifts really get you connected with the car, with its 6 speed manual transmission. Best experienced on curving roads, the coupe is reasonably good but not the speed demon you might expect. As far as styling is concerned, the exterior is a sleek, standard-looking style, but the four-door design is a new feature. Interiors in this car are okay, though nothing very cozy. There is rear space for adults, but just enough for a comfortable short drive. Of course, slightly big child seats can be accommodated. There are options for luxury packages like leather upholstery. The special edition Shinka package is another one you could try. Overall, a reasonably good car.
