The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is a new introduction to the subcompact market.  It was released in order to replace the under-performing Chevy Aveo.  Fortunately for new car buyers, the Sonic has very little in common with its predecessor.  In fact, many have described it as a quantum leap forward.  It was designed to offer both fuel-efficiency and power and an overall level of comfort not normally found its class.  Some of the cars in direct competition with it include the Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit. 

This year, the Chevy Sonic will be available in both a sedan and 4 door hatchback models.  The interior is considered to be some of the most spacious and livable in its segment, although the hatchback does offer a little space than the sedan.  Not only is there more overall storage space in the Sonic, but the overall utilization of space in the cabin is considered to be at the top of its class.  For example, there is more in-cabin storage due to several cleverly places storage areas, such as the pair of bins located on the center stack.  As a driver and passenger, the Sonic offers more than enough headroom and shoulder space, which can be a problem among subcompact cars.  If you are planning on switching from a larger car, then the Sonic is definitely worth a look because it “feels” larger than much of its competition.

Another area where the Sonic stands far ahead of its predecessors is under the hood.  It features a 1.8-liter inline-4 which offers nearly 140 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque.  There is also a turbocharged option as well.  In its segment, the Sonic is far and away the most powerful car.  It also has fairly strong handing capabilities, although not quite as good as the Ford Fiesta.  Overall, you should get about 40 mpg on the highway with the more powerful turbocharged engine. 

A lot of people have safety concerns about smaller cars such as a the Chevrolet Sonic.  In this case, the concern is unjustified.  Not only does include stability control, anti-lock brakes, side airbags, and even front knee airbags, but it was also the recipient of the Top Safety Pick award presented by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Everyone has heard about the runaway cars that Toyota was forced to recall, however the most recent studies are reporting that these recalls were not necessary.  What once was considered one of biggest safety scandals in Toyota history, is being reported as a giant myth.  The most recent US Government findings are showing that it was the actually the drivers fault in almost every case.  This is a big change of position for US government who was very hostile a few months ago when Akio Toyoda delivered a seemingly humble apology to congress.

After more than 9.5 million Toyota vehicles were recalled, the US Transportation Department and NASA are both reveling that there may never have been a problem with these cars at all.  In fact, in almost every case, the drivers failed to press the brake until the final moment before an impact, if they hit the breaks at all.  The preliminary report covered the 58 most well known crashes that were attributed to the defective Toyotas.  Investigators discovered that in 35 of those cases, the brake was never depressed.  Additionally, in 14 other accidents, only partial braking was even used.  In 1 case, both the brake and the accelerator were floored and in another, the gas pedal got wedged under the floor mat, which will always make the brakes useless.  To matters worse (or better) for Toyota, so far there have been zero accidents that shown any evidence that the cause was an electronic malfunction and the recall may have been completely unnecessary

Recently, the United States Department of Transportation wanted to reiterate that these results are a very small part of a comprehensive investigation and there is still a lot more research that is currently underway.  The goal of this research is to determine whether or not there is any potential for electronic or software defects to be part of the cause of the “unintended accelerations” that Toyota was previously blamed for.  This is great news for Toyota who, in February, was blamed by federal safety regulators for causing accidents that were tied to at least 34 deaths over the last decade.  The most notable of which was when a police officer and 3 of his relatives were killed as their Toyota Lexus shot down the driveway and into traffic.

David Champion, the Director of Consumer Reports (Testing Division), reported that Toyota, during testing, did have a higher incident rate and more complaints, however this may be because a majority of Toyota drivers are an older demographic, which is statistically much more prone to be involved with an accident.

While this news is great for Toyota insofar that if these studies continue to corroborate the early finding, then it clearly is not an electronic or software related issue, it may be too late to matter.  Consider this, what if it is discovered that none of this was actually Toyota’s fault.  They still had to recall nearly 10 million vehicles and they have already been run through the mud in the public arena.  Even if this is not their fault, they have already been dealt a devastating blow that may take a lot of work and a lot of time to complete a full recovery from.

While the Honda CR-Z definitely isn’t a sports car, it has taken huge leaps to help change people’s minds about how fund and sporty a hybrid can actually be.  The Honda CR-Z was released as a two-seater in the United States, however Europe and Japan will get a two-seater, plus a back seat as well.  This sportier model shows a very noticeable amount of increased power, however it also has an “eco” mode that will cut the power, but also will significantly decrease the amount of gasoline that is used.

During the creation process, Honda minimized the overall development costs by borrowing basic components from the Insight hybrid 5-door hatchback.  This includes the engine as well as a large amount of the IMA (integrated motor assist) technology.  Currently, the CR-Z offers both an automatic and 6 speed manual transmission.  Additional steps were made to improve the overall performance, most notably by reducing its overall weight.  It has done so by using forged aluminum in many places.  It has also reduced the weight by adding additional cargo room in the back instead of offering a back seat.

Currently, the CR-Z is going to be first made available on August 24^th and is projected to be less than $20,000.

Possible Concerns

One concern for people who are looking at the CR-Z as a very Eco-friendly vehicle is that the engine is the main driver, whereas the electric motor is only there to assist.  At the same time, this isn’t any different than the current Eco-friendly vehicles.  Currently, the Honda Fit (which is not a hybrid) gets about the same has mileage as the CR-Z.  Additionally, even though it has a sportier look, it will still feature a 1.5 liter engine, just like the Insight.  However, there is a good chance that Honda will also make a CR-Z with a 1.8 liter in the near future (even though it will only add about 20 more horsepower).  It is also important to point out that since Honda utilized a torsion-beam rear suspension, the overall ride may be a little more bouncy than if the CR-Z had a fully independent setup.  It did, however, get 4 out of 5 stars during its recent crash test.

In the end, the CR-Z definitely doesn’t fit the bill of being a “sport’s car”.  At the same time, it will be much more fun to drive than the Insight or Prius.  While it is a step forward, there is still a lot of work to be done before a sports car is created that is actually Eco-friendly.

Audi has released its new oil burner (diesel powered) sports car – the TT Coupe Quattro 2.0.  As turbo-diesel cars have become mainstream in recent times, sports cars seemed to have been overlooked somewhat.  But Audi has come up with a superb car with good torque and excellent fuel economy.  There are now eight TTs to choose from including the TDI Quattro.

Interior

Audi is well known for its quality of finish and interior.  The TT Quattro is no different.  Predominantly black with buttons backlit in stark red, everything is easy to find and operate.  The “cockpit” provides a brilliant driving position that does not require too much effort to enter.  In the front leg room and headroom is limited but, after all, this is a sports car.  Still it does offer folding rear seats, which gives some practicality.

Driveability

The TT Quattro has excellent grip which is the hallmark of Audi’s all-wheel system.  In combination with the high torque levels and the TT becomes a mean machine without the big engine.  The key to its on road performance is its low weight.

The TT comes only in a six-speed manual so an automatic is not available in the diesel.  It has a power output of 125 kW (172PS) and 350 Nm of torque. Yet at the same time the TT Coupé consumes on average only around 53.3 mpg.

What’s Included

The standard gear is limited which may disappoint some buyers.  The starting base price gives you climate controlled A/C, leather trim, cruise, auto headlights and wipers, six-stack CD stereo and 17 inch alloys.  But, as always, other Audi extras are costly.

Summary

During an auto show in Frankfurt, Ford Motor Company announced its decision to release the Ford C-Max to the United States in 2011. This car was released in Europe in 2003 and has been a sensational hit since. The Ford C-Max comes in a 7 passenger as well as 5 passenger cars.

Ford plan is to use their newly initiated C-segment architecture to make up to two million cars each year as well as 10 exclusive models depending on the platform.

One of those models is the new Ford Focus, which is currently a popular car in Europe and will be coming to the United States in 2011. It will be replacing the tired type that is now running in the United States.

Ford Motor also revealed their Focus Econetic at the auto show in Frankfurt as the most efficient and optimized variant of the original Focus. The emission output is 99 grams per kilometer and gives almost 62 miles to the gallon.

U.S. automakers will have a smaller presence at the Frankfurt Auto Show this month.  There will be new electric vehicles many hope will secure the auto industry’s post-recession comeback.

GM’s Cadillac brand won’t have a presence while  Chrysler’s Dodge and Jeep have moved to the Fiat stand.  GM’s European brands, Opel and Saab, will only serve to remind that GM is selling them. Other notable absences include Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan’s Infiniti, which are instead focusing on the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

Many attendees at the show will focus on advances in electric cars and hybrids, and for improvements that might bring the vehicles into the mainstream. They’ll also look for clues about forthcoming small-car offerings from U.S. carmakers aiming to improve their line of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Top new product offerings include four new electric vehicles from Renault, with one headed for consumers by 2011, including one with no internal combustion engine at all; a hybrid Mercedes B-Class, called the F-Cell, which sports a fuel cell and an electric motor; and the first plug-in version of Toyota’s Prius hybrid, meaning its batteries can be charged from a household outlet.

GM will tout its Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in electric that uses an internal-combustion engine to extend its range beyond the distances that the batteries are capable of handling.

Those cars are headed for consumers soon, but BMW AG gives a look farther down the road with its low-slung supercoupe, the Vision EfficientDynamics. It’s a high performance, plug-in diesel-electric hybrid powered by a three-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo engine, and by not one but two electric motors, one for the rear wheels, one for the front.

“There will be an electric car at almost every stand,” at this year’s Frankfurt show, Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, an industry expert at the University of Duisburg-Essen said, although it would be some time before they are on the production line and in dealer show rooms.

“Like in hybrids, the Japanese are ahead of the Germans in electric cars,” he said. “One of the reasons is the battery technology which in Japan is systematically further developed.

“Another reason is Germans’ strength in diesel,” Dudenhoeffer said. “Large parts companies like Robert Bosch, for example, are behind the curve in batteries and electric cars,” compared to the Japanese, he said.

He said Toyota has already built its 2 millionth hybrid car this year — an important link in the electric car chain — while Daimler’s Mercedes S400, the only German hybrid on the market so far, has built less than 200 of the cars to date.

In August, Nissan Motor Co. in Japan unveiled the Leaf, an electric car scheduled to go into mass production for a global market in 2012. And U.S. President Barack Obama committed $2.4 billion in federal grants to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries in the U.S.

Last month, Germany’s government said it would commit some euro500 million over the next three years on a plan to put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2020, including euro170 million into battery research.

The heavy batteries that take the place of international combustion engines and gasoline are expensive to produce, and countries like South Korea and Japan are far ahead in research and development. Improving them is key.

Analysts expect global production of purely electric cars to expand rapidly in the coming years. IHS Global Insight forecast that it will grow from nearly 9,500 this year to more than 58,000 in 2011.

Germany’s Volkswagen AG, Europe’s biggest automaker, has said it hopes to introduce its first electric cars on the market in 2013. It’s expected to show off an electric version of its “Up!” city car. Daimler AG, which has been testing an electric version of its two-seater Smart, is working with California-based electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. on developing better battery and electric drive systems.

Ford Motor Co. will also offer an all-electric commercial van in 2010 and plans to have three other electric vehicles available in the U.S. by 2012.
